Jones, Kevin (2005) The aeolian harp, the "dark saying" and the subject of Elgar's 13th enigma variation. In: Elgar Conference; 01-03 Jul 2005, Stratford-upon-Avon, U.K.. (Submitted)
Abstract
Examines Elgar’s deep interest in the Aeolian harp, its physical acoustics and musical effects, and considers its possible influence in the Enigma Variations, particularly in the light of parallels with the Aeolian Harp movement of Berlioz’s Lelio, much admired by Elgar, and Aeolian references in Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, quoted by Elgar.
