Abstract
The current SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) system in the UK faces deep-rooted challenges, leaving many children without the support they need. This article, drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s ecosystemic model, outlines key areas for reform across different levels—child and family, school, local authority, national, and government. It highlights the need for a child- and family-centered approach, greater access to assessments, reduced class sizes, increased funding, and cultural shifts in schools. At the local and national levels, stronger accountability, improved workforce strategies, and more inclusive policies are essential. Urgent action is needed to address systemic inequalities and ensure that all children, regardless of their needs, can thrive in an education system that is truly inclusive.
