Abstract

The underlying materials of Kielder Forest are timber and time. With trees growing in distinct plantations for several decades, a range of time-spans are evident within the neatly divided plots of forest that cover the landscape. This layering of time is also present in the growth rings buried deep within the individual trees. Taking the form of a stacked mass of timber, awaiting future use, ‘Timelapse’ encloses a space where time grows and bends. Within the end walls, growth rings in the stacked timber are carefully aligned to construct new durations, reflecting the centenary of the Forestry Commission during 2019. Whilst on the ceiling and floor text by the poet S J Fowler flows along the beams in corroding copper, referencing the invisible fluidity of time. First described within A. Einstein’s 1905 paper on Special Relativity, gravity affects the speed of time and therefore the floor being closer to the earth is constantly slipping behind the ceiling which cannot help but imperceptibly slide ahead. Timelapse forms a place to rest and reflect on the nature of time within the depths of Kielder Forest.
