| Additional Information: | Composition for 2-channel tape. Using the score-generating software Common Music and the signal-processing software Common Lisp Music, a structural description of signal processing as well as algorithmic systems were performed and printed in ASCII code. An algorithm generating bi-directional, "bouncing" variables was programmed to generate data for pitch, panning, duration, amplitude and envelopes. The piece was created completely in the digital domain on the NeXT network of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University. No recording or post-processing in the analog domain was performed throughout the compositional process. The resulting soundfile took advantage of the wide range of amplitude thresholds made possible via the 16bit format. The Gates of H. was performed in January and October 1997 at the INA-GRM in Paris, at the Inventionen 2000 in Berlin on the Birmingham BEAST Sound System, BIMESP98 Sao Paolo, Rien a Voir, Montreal. It was broadcast in Radio France, ORF, Linz, Hessischer Rundfunk and several other stations worldwide. It has twice been published on CD, by Prix Ars Electronica and Degem CD1 "Stimmen" (Cybele Records). |
