Abstract
The memoir of Sam Russell, a Communist journalist and volunteer with the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. He was wounded in Spain and became the Daily Worker reporter there, beginning more than 40 years of working at the paper and its successor, the Morning Star, despite his disillusionment with Stalinism. He covered many of the key historical events of the 20th century, reporting from Moscow when Khrushchev gave his 'secret speech', Hungary in 1956, Cuba in 1962 during the missile crisis when he interviewed Che Guevara, Prague in 1968, Vietnam during the war with America, and Chile in 1973 when he witnessed the bombing of the Presidential palace that launched the military coup.
