Abstract

Informal power has substantial importance in the modern business environment. With the impact of organisational change, different technologies and increased uncertainty, it is vital to mobilise resources without the use of formal position and power. This paper systematically reviews the sources and impacts of informal power and builds a framework for understanding the different sources of informal power, how they are used and by whom. The use of informal power is not the sole preserve of the dominant coalition. Informal power is used by people at different levels within organisations and by both men and women. In terms of impacts, informal power adds value in a variety of settings including innovation, conflict handling, crisis situations, decision-making, and when influencing others within the organisation. Traditional use of formal power is not enough. There is a need to go beyond position and personal power and to appreciate the potential of relational power as a major source of informal influence.
