Abstract
The eighteenth century was a period of changing attitudes towards domestic life as it was a time of physical change to the spaces in which daily life took place. Literature, as well as the arts in general, provide us with an awareness and understanding of how people lived in and used interior space at this time. Literary representations of domestic spaces present a constructed reality often influenced by the social and historical period in which they were written. Representations do idealize, dramatize and, to some extent, fabricate the lived experience of the interior. Yet when analysed with reference to their context, they remain valuable sources of evidence.
