Mass market fashion doll range, including Billy, Carlos, and Tyson dolls; Billy clothing; and all related merchandise. Manufactured by Totem International Ltd. Billy, the world's first 'Out and Proud Gay Doll' (c) 1997, and other dolls in the collection, are fashion products defined by a broad lifestyle approachto design and marketing. The Billy concept was originally conceived, researched and produced as a handcrafted 1,200 limited edition, sculpted artwork reflecting a lifestyle. The intention was to develop the concept into a commerical product range. Scale of production: production began February 1997. Approx 250,000 pieces sold by March 2001. Market and distribution: distributed widely via independent retailers, department stores, websites and mail order catalogues worldwide. The original concept was to create a social/political artwork and to develop it subsequently into a commerial mass-produced lifestyle product. Research into doll production led to innovative methods of manufacture which enable the rotary-moulded components of the 12 inch dolls to be produced without the use of seaming of the simplification of the finely sculted originals. McKitterick's roles involved research, design, and production in the areas of sculpture, 3D/product design, industrial design, graphics, fashion and marketing. |
