Abstract

Concepts of leadership, management and governance cover the structures, systems, and processes that deliver the values, purposes, and outcomes of higher education. Leadership is the skill of motivating, guiding and empowering a team or organization towards a mutually agreed vision. Management is the process of planning, leading, organizing and monitoring people within a group or organization to achieve goals. Governance means the processes and structures that facilitate decision making and appropriate delegation of authority, accountability and responsibility, Good governance aims to ensure legitimacy and transparency of decision making to contribute to efficiency and effectiveness of the higher education institution. This chapter outlines leadership, management and governance and describes the way institutions and the people working in them relate to each other through systems and processes operating vertically and horizontally. It is not implied that leadership, management and governance are discrete entities that operate in a linear fashion. On the contrary they are concepts that inter-relate, are dynamic and interdependent. The leadership, management and governance of universities is contextually specific and varies internationally, influenced by different histories, political jurisdictions, and across institutions with distinct missions. This chapter outlines leadership, management, and governance and describes the way institutions and the people working in them relate to each other through systems and processes operating vertically and horizontally, then explores This chapter provides an overview of leadership, management and governance and draws from research findings, documentary evidence, and personal experiences in UK higher education leadership to provide illustrative and practical examples.
