Abstract

This invited paper is a contribution to the seminar series on 'Kojeve-Dialogues: Extra-Philosophical Practices of Philosophy', celebrating the 50th anniversary of Alexandre Kojeve's death in 1968. The talk will situate Kojeve's notion of authority in the context of his philosophy of right. Towards the end of WWII, Kojeve described the new world order which will mark the transition to the 21st century as an emerging form of tyranny that intersects and pits legitimacy and legality against one another. While the former aims to manage 'economic societies', the latter consists of inadequate forms of authority cast as changing combinations of mastery with leadership, tradition and/ or justice. The talk explores Kojeve's theory of legitimacy in light of recent developments in the sphere of global politics.
