Abstract

The advent of digital photography and online platforms makes the act of photographing and sharing an integral part of our daily lives. New technologies, and ways of disseminating photographs, have reignited debates in relation to vernacular photography in culture and society, and its place in art and the museum. While such debates have haunted photography since its invention, they have taken new directions due to the instant accessibility to images online and to museums investing in collecting photography. In the Starr Auditorium, Tate Modern, eminent speakers discuss the place of the vernacular in contemporary photography, the distinction between public and private, and how vernacular photography sits within museum collections and archives.
