Abstract
The exhibition was the culmination of the first stage of the Bummock project (https://www.bummock.org/), led by Danica Maier and Andrew Bracey with invited artist Lucy Renton. During this stage of the five year research project, the artists worked with items chosen from the Nottingham Lace Archive, developing their individual works through collaborative residencies at Summer Lodge (Nottingham Trent University) and hARTslane Gallery London. Lucy Renton chose 2 items from the archive from which to develop works through her Fine Art practice. 1. The Period Guide - a manual of interior decoration 2. Samples of synthetic knitted lace fabrics from the defunct Fryma fabric company Her exhibited works were: 1. Modern Adaptation - a whole room installation, including a version of her work 'Richard & Judy' . Mixed media including canvas, acrylic and household paints, vinyl tablecloths, haberdashery, floor matting, vintage wallpaper and gouache. 2. Swinger - radiator cover with acrylic and household paints, mirror screws 3. A Bit of Skirt - vinyl tablecloths 4. 2501 - screenprint on vinyl tablecloth fabric 5. Also exhibited a vitrine containing the archive items. A Symposium also took place in connection with the opening of this exhibition. Musical compositions developed in conjunction with the works of Maier and Bracey were performed live or played via recordings throughout the exhibition. A series of public workshops took place during the exhibition. A publication documenting the exhibition and research questions and presentations from the Symposium is due in Autumn 2018 and will show works by all three artists including performance musical compositions developed in conjunction with the work of Maier and Bracey. Further exhibitions of work from this project in the Nottingham Lace Archive took place at the Ruskin Gallery, Cambridge Jan - Feb 2019 and the Constance Howard Archive, Goldsmiths Nov-December 2019
