Abstract
This article discusses the significance of music to the catwalk and its narratives. It considers music’s role in some of the catwalk’s most iconoclastic moments from Ossie Clark’s ‘Revolution’ shows of the late 1960s and early 1970s to Marc Jacobs’ 1993 show for ‘Perry Ellis’ that was said to have ‘killed grunge’. The article acknowledges the bespoke and derivative, live and recorded nature of catwalk music, before placing emphasis on collaborations between sound designers like Seigen Ono and Jeremy Healy and global fashion brands, which produce not only individual soundtracks, but also a culture of taste-making that intertwines the fashion and music industries.
