Abstract

This work aims to contribute to the emergent field of study within economics which aims to apply Foucauldian influenced postcolonial analysis to the study of the economy. Specifically to assess to what extent the emergence of the idea of Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) can contribute to alternatives offered by postdevelopment critics of Development in fostering non-exploitative economic relations. The piece is divided into three parts. Firstly, I introduce the work of Michel Foucault laying out the tools and approaches that have and could be useful for a study of Development. Secondly, analyse how his work has been taken up by postdevelopment thinkers in relation to the study of Development. Finally to think about how the Social and Solidarity Economy sits in relation to these thinkers proposed alternatives to Development. I conclude that bringing the work of Michel Foucault to the study of Development is fruitful, secondly that this allows for the establishment of an expanded picture of Development and finally that the SSE allows for a break in the oppressive power dynamics at play in contemporary Development policy and practice.
