Abstract
Chapter (4,000 words and 6 plates) in an exhibition catalogue which explores the friendship between two official British war artists: Eric Kennington and William Rothenstein c. 1916- 1945 (the year of Rothenstein's death) and the image they created at roughly the same time of the shell-ravaged landscape of the Western Front. The chapter draws upon unpublished correspondence between Kennington and Rothenstein and between Kennington and Rothenstein's wife and daughter c. 1917-19. The Chapter also reproduces 4 rarely seen landscapes of the Western Front by Eric Kennington when his compelling portraiture in pastel and charcoal has invariably been the focus of attention.
