Arch (The Politics of Fragmentation)

Teplin, Alexis [Artist] (2016) Arch (The Politics of Fragmentation). 20th Bienale of Sydney : The future is already here : it's just not evenly distributed.

Abstract

For the 20th Biennale of Sydney, I was commissioned to present a new work titled, Arch (The Politics of Fragmentation) in the ’Embassy of the Real’ section of the Biennale. This piece was constructed in direct response to the architecture of Cockatoo Island and included four large-scale free standing paintings, three costumes and a performance work. This new play was written in response to historical political theatre (Jana Natya Manch and Commedia dell’Arte) and discussed the relationships between language, gesture and social archetypes. It used text from literature, media and cinema alongside my own writing. Arch proposes a fictional reality; one influenced by the fragmentation of language in the digital age and asked, “When decadence fails us in our quest for utopia, where do we end up?”
