British Red Cross VAD Transcribing Project

Hawkins, Susan [Consultant] and Goepel, Helen [Contractor] (2016) British Red Cross VAD Transcribing Project.

Abstract

This project has generated a web-based resource, primarily for family historians searching for members of the British Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments during World War 1. The project was run by BRC and funded by HLF. The Centre for the Historical Record was subcontracted by the BRC to manage the transcription of the membership records using volunteer transcribers. CHR recruited and provided online training for 800 volunteers to undertake this work. The transcribing work was performed and managed via a dedicated website. The project took 2 years and was completed in May 2016, producing a database of over 200,000 individuals who worked as VADs during the war. The whole database is available free of charge to the general public via a dedicated section of the BRC website http://www.redcross.org.uk/en/About-us/Who-we-are/History-and-origin/First-World-War/Volunteers-during-WW1.
