Ware, Vron (2007) Who cares about Britishness? A global view of the national identity debate. London, UK : Arcadia Books. 180p. ISBN 9781905147588

Abstract

Independently written as a result of a British Council initiative, 'New National Identities', the book draws on interviews with young people in South Asia, Kenya, Ireland, Poland and the UK. Situated within current discourse on Britishness, it investigates the importance of national identities in relation to class, religion, racism and other forms of exclusion, including Islamophobia and homophobia, gender, consumer culture, education and technology. Chapters include the significance of place, postcolonial history and memory, multiple identities and forms of local/global citizenship. Brings postcolonial perspectives to UK-based debates, with a strong comparative element intended to promote cross-cultural dialogue.
