Abstract
One hundred years on from the success of Captain Robert Scott in reaching the remote and distant South Pole and his subsequent heroic death, Antarctica can no longer be regarded as 'a Pole Apart'. Apart from being linked by air and satellite communications to the wider world, today Antarctica is recognised as playing an integral role in global environmental systems exerting significant impacts upon world climates and sea levels.
