Abstract
This research investigating the careers of Practice Teaching Award holders in London and the South East region drew on questionnaires to 438 PTA holders (50% response) and interviews with agency learning and development managers. A key theme to emerge was that the Award was seen as providing an opportunity to develop supervisory skills which might assist a move to management or to become a senior practitioner with staff supervisory responsibilities, and that there were many factors in their careers and organizations affecting Practice Teachers' abilities or willingness to continue supervising student social workers on placements.
