Abstract
In recent years, sustainable, refurbishment of existing dwellings has attracted a lot of attention. Compared with new buildings, the numbers of existing buildings is greater and they consume more energy every year. Sustainable refurbishment involves the modernization of existing buildings by using life cycle assessment. It encourages the enormous existing buildings to be more sustainable and enhances living quality. This study investigates what sustainable refurbishment is, how the sustainable refurbishment can improve the performance of existing dwellings, and if experiences in the UK can be broadly used in China. Although site conditions, climate, local resource and economic conditions are very different, the basic considerations are universal. This study has set up systemic guidelines for sustainable refurbishment of existing houses in China after a thorough comparison of current sustainable refurbishment in the UK and China. The study analyses two sustainable refurbishment projects in Fengjing Town, Shanghai, China and the guidelines have been tested. The findings have shown that the current practices in the UK can broadly be applied to China.
