Doggett, Julia (1986) The development of certain processes in Witold Lutoslawski's compositions after 1960, with particular reference to the post-1978 works. (MPhil thesis), Kingston Polytechnic, .
Abstract
This thesis sets out to discover if Lutoslawski's compositional techniques have followed a continuous line of development since the year 1960. The investigation is conducted by means of an analytical approach to his music, and the thesis does not intend to provide a chronological survey of his work. Chapters one, two and three will be devoted to the development of Lutoslawski's compositional techniques involving the horizontal and vertical manipulation of pitch, instrumentation. texture and form. These processes will be discussed with reference to their initiation, transformation and integration. Musical examples will be cited from a broad spectrum of Lutoslawski's compositions, and a special emphasis has been placed on those written after 1978. The fourth chapter is devoted solely to Lutoslawski"s Third Symphony, which was premiered in 1983. In this focal chapter an attempt has been made to show how the techniques discussed in the previous chapters have been incorporated, and are partly responsible for the emergence of this major composition, which has provided a significant contribution to the musical literature of the twentieth century.
