Abstract
This article considers the brief career of an almost forgotten Irish explorer - Dr. Joseph Moloney (1858-1896). Moloney, acting as medical officer to the Stairs expedition to 'Katangaland' in the Congo in 1891, helped save the expedition and lead the survivors back to safety in 1892. Shortly after, Captain Stairs died. When the Royal Geographical Society met in 1893, they agreed that Moloney had been 'the backbone of the expedition'.
