Abstract

My aim was to take a post-modern multicultural view of Versailles. The narrative focus of the documentaries is the activities centred around the contemporary Palace of Versailles. These range from restoration of the palace and grounds to the installation of contemporary art works. The compositions are electro-acoustic and composed in the recording studio. There are approximately 70 cues in all which explore the connection and disconnection between the stylistic periods of the images and music. I utilised advance digital sampling, editing and processing techniques in realising the work. The compositions recreate musical genres from the French baroque through to contemporary world, dance, R&B and rock styles. The sound sources range from acoustic recordings to found sounds and readily available and recognisable sound libraries. The research involves experimentation in combining these genres both musically and sonically and the interplay with the narrative of the images. Genres are sometimes combined simultaneously within a cue, sometimes sequentially and in fast succession, and experiment with cross-cultural juxtapositions with image.
