Developing and delivering teaching excellence as course leader of BA Film

O'sullivan, Shane

Impact Summary

In 2017, the university consolidated film provision within KSA and decided to teach out BA (Hons) Film due to perceived competition for students with BA Filmmaking. I was appointed course leader in September 2017 and successfully managed the smooth transition of the course team and students from FASS to KSA, with minimal disruption to the student experience or team morale after the voluntary redundancy of two long-serving colleagues. This is evidenced by the 2018 NSS results, which show a student satisfaction rate of 92%, the highest in the recent history of the degree, up 29% year-on-year. There were significant improvements under all key themes, with Learning Community up 20%. In 2016, BA Film Studies was rebranded BA Film, shifting the balance between theory and practice modules from 75:25 to 50:50. As evidenced by MEQ data, I oversaw the successful validation and roll-out of three new filmmaking modules for the final intake of students: (FI5005, FI5006 and FI6012). These were all commended by the external examiners, whose feedback on the course was extremely positive during my three years of course leadership, praising the innovative assessment strategies and noting “the standards of assessment and feedback have been consistently outstanding.”

Key Aims

My role as course leader included course development and enhancement; enhancing student satisfaction and the quality of student experience; ensuring staff cohesion and building a learning community of staff and students; and developing new modules integrating professional practice skills desired by employers and innovative teaching strategies with key partners in the cultural heritage sector, raising the department’s profile in the field.

Approach

As course leader, I used course dashboards, the annual monitoring process, student, staff and external examiner feedback, and my experience working as an external examiner at another institution to undertake continuous course enhancement. Drawing on my professional experience and depth of subject knowledge, I developed innovative new teaching strategies, archival resources and strategic partnerships with leaders in the sector.

Key Outcomes

In my first year of course leadership, the student satisfaction rate jumped to 92%, the highest in the recent history of the degree, up 29% year-on-year. There were significant improvements under all key themes, with Learning Community up 20%. I successfully managed the smooth transition of the course team and students from FASS to KSA in 2017, with minimal disruption to the student experience or team morale. I led curriculum development and enhancement, overseeing the successful validation and roll-out of three new filmmaking modules for the final intake of students. These integrated professional practice into modules, inspired by my external examining work at London Met and enhancing career planning and employability. I successfully managed the teach-out of the degree, transferring the remaining practice students to Filmmaking to maintain student experience and providing support for repeating students by delivery teaching through other modules. In partnership with the British Film Institute, I integrated scholarship and pedagogic research to design the innovative Archives for Education pilot for the documentary production module (FI4001) in 2017. The pilot generated very positive feedback from students and led to one student film being nominated for a Learning on Screen Award and another student working on an archive project with the BBC. I led partnership and engagement with leading camera manufacturer ARRI to secure our participation as one of the first UK universities to offer the new ARRI Certified Film School Accreditation Program to L6 and L7 cinematography students, enhancing professional skills and employability and supporting future recruitment. Two staff received training in December and are preparing to launch ARRI certified training for L6 cinematography students in May 2020, which will enhance their camera skills and career prospects and aid future recruitment and short course development.
