Abstract

'In such a chase...' is a dual-language poem. The poem retells a brief memory from childhood about an attempt to stop the world from moving too quickly. Written in response to public social and political discourse in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong in 2019, it calls on us to reflect on how we got here, and where it is are we going. Volume 5 of PROVA, published online in July 2020, takes its title and main questions from conversations that emerged from the conference 'Living Research - Urgency of the Arts' hosted by the National Association for Fine Art Education (NAFAE) and the Royal College of Art, London. The focus was to investigate ways that practice and research in the arts might be put to use and brought to bear on the urgent socio-political and environmental issues of our contemporary moment: what does arts and humanities research have to offer? The focus of this question was not on how arts research could be instrumentalised or applied in confrontation to these issues, but instead how the work of artists, arts workers, artistic researchers, and educators might lead to new understandings of our world(s) and the relations which form it. The poem is derived from a script originally written as a monologue for a short film presented as part of the conference's joint keynote address. This work was adapted for publication in print in June 2020, alongside works by other authors derived from the same event. The conference was held on the 15th March 2019.
