Air-to-Air (Pitched Formation)

Using the invisible aerial architecture of military refuelling as a starting point, Air-to-Air (Pitched Formation) explores the material and immaterial dimensions of defence aviation. The aluminium frames are a formal and aesthetic conflation of segregated airspaces over the south west of Britain and the broader notion of the vehicular 'air frame' as a highly refined mechanical structure. The frames are suspended over a horizontal screen displaying moving images of cloudscape shot by Flintham on commercial flights over the UK and surrounding seas.

Made for the Unsensed exhibition at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle in September 2015, Air-toAir (Pitched Formation) explores the invisible dimensions of militarism and industrial aerospace development.
