Dyslexia and the workplace: an inquiry into some individuals' experiences in relation to their employment

Savitch-Lee, Sava Anne (1999) Dyslexia and the workplace: an inquiry into some individuals' experiences in relation to their employment. (MPhil thesis), Kingston University, .

Abstract

The inquiry reported in this dissertation concerned the workplace experiences of adults with dyslexia and some of the effects dyslexia has had on their working lives. Fifty-five self-selected volunteers (adult employees with dyslexia) were inteviewed by telephone and their accounts were then categorised and analysed. Independently, the views and polices of employers towards dyslexia were also sought. The existing literature, current legislation including the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) and sources of information were reviewed and taken into account. One outcome of the research was a clearer insight into the stressful and often emotionally charged dilemma facing dyslexics, namely whether or not to declare their disability at work. The desired consequence of this action would be an improved working environment. Another, very practical outcome was the production of an advice booklet on employment and dyslexia, which is to be distributed by the Adult Dyslexia Organisation.
