The stylistic development of Gyorgy Ligeti 1967-1974

Richards, Ann (1989) The stylistic development of Gyorgy Ligeti 1967-1974. (MPhil thesis), Kingston Polytechnic, .

This thesis traces the stylistic development of Gyorgy Ligeti during the period 1967-74 in order to discover whether or not there is a continuous line of development. The investigation is conducted by means of an analytical approach to Ligeti's music. Chapters Two and Four are each devoted to analysis of one work (Lontano and the Chamber Concerto respectively) and examine the varying compositional techniques used, including both Ligeti's static and mechanical style of composition. Chapters Three and Five outline the varying developments of the compositional style as they appear in other works of the period, specifically with regard to the emergence of harmony and melody. In the final chapter an attempt has been made to show how the techniques discussed in previous chapters have been used in 'San Francisco polyphony' (1974). This composition is seen as occupying a significant place within Ligeti's output, marking a complete reversal from his original ideas of the Fifties.
