A gestural analysis of music and dance through live composition

Minors, Helen Julia (2011) A gestural analysis of music and dance through live composition. In: Dance and Music: Moving Dialogues; 16 - 19 Feb 2011, Montreal, Canada. (Unpublished)

In what way can a culturally informed definition of expressive gesture aid an analysis and experi-ential understanding of the intersection between music and dance? Using Soundpainting ‘ as a case study, this paper challenges how musicians and dancers, and moreover creative artists, create and contribute to a dialogue between, across and within the arts. Interviews with the Soundpainter Walter Thompson pro-vide a practical and applied basis for analysis, challenging how music-dance dialogues are formed. A meta-language is suggested which positively crosses the arts allowing for a dialogue which privileges interactivity and posits a form of communication which crosses both disciplines.
