Abstract

This is am exhibition that explores a diversity of artist's responding to the postcard. The show brings together a number of contemporary artist's to exhibit at Tintype Gallery. The exhibition coincides with a number of other linked exhibitions that draw upon the extensive postcard collection of Jeremy Cooper, who has donated his collection to the British Museum. He is donating his Collection to the British Museum - and this is forms the basis of the exhibition there opening in February 2019: - The World Exists To Be Put On A Postcard.  Artists' Postcards from 1960 to now, British Museum Prints and Drawings Department, runs for four months (with early Bridget Riley prints in the other half of the galleries) Curated by Stephen Coppell Catalogue published by Thames & Hudson, 98 pages of illustrations Jeremy’s collection includes work by Tacita Dean, Rachel Whiteread, Richard Hamilton, Joseph Beuys, Dieter Roth, Jonathan Monk, Susan Hiller, Angus Fairhurst – and many many others. In March, four other Postcard shows will open: Tintype’s - plus Danielle Arnaud, Joanna Gemes of L’Étrangère Gallery, and Tanya Peixto of Bookartbookshop are participating. The shows are linked but each one has its own identity. Danielle Arnuad will be showing new postcard work by kennardphillipps (Peter Kennard and Cat Phillipps) in her upstairs space and an installation of Jeremy Cooper’s collection of commercial postcards downstairs. L’Étrangère will be showing postcard pieces by the Factual Nonsense artists. Bookartbookshop will be showing political postcards form the 80s and 90s (such as the Leeds Postcards, Jacky Fleming’s feminist cartoons, and Paul Morton’s Dot-to-Dot destruction of Margaret Thatcher). The exhibition at Tintype will run from 7th March - 6th April 2019.
