Ornament of damage

Fatehrad, Azadeh (2017) Ornament of damage. Sheffield, U.K. : Gordian Projects. 45p.

Abstract

'Ornaments of Damage' is a reflection on various archival material including that held at the Weltkulturen Museum, Frankfurt am Main; the International Institute of Social History (IISH), Amsterdam; and the Institute for Iranian Contemporary Historical Studies (IICHS), Tehran. On encountering the photographic archives, I was fascinated by the traces of handling, ageing and conservation. The images presented here demonstrate some less obvious or visible elements of the material, from the envelopes that hold the archival documents, the stamps that show their passage to the museums/institutes, the chaotic boxes of documents being stored, the pages cataloguing the documents, to the saturated images of their digital scans. ‘Ornaments of Damage’ refers to the unseen part of archival research, the unaccountable data in archival research. The photographs in the publication are accompanied with a short description that reflects on the encounter between the researcher (myself) and the documents.
