Potter, Caroline (2003) Debussy and nature. In: Tresize, Simon, (ed.) The Cambridge companion to Debussy. Cambridge, UK : Cambridge University Press. pp. 137-151. (Cambridge Companion to Music) ISBN 0521654785

Abstract

For Debussy, nature was at the same time a source of inspiration and a refuge from fellow human beings. Using the composer's own writings as a guide, the nature-related concept of arabesque in Debussy's music is explored, focusing on key works including "La mer" and the sonata for flute, viola and harp.
