Abstract

This paper showcases learning in an international midwifery module; demonstrating student potential to positively make a difference to maternity care. Students are tasked with developing an information resource for a professional audience, presenting material utilising a creative method; an approach which prepares them for real-world tasks they may need to complete as midwives. After the first occurrence students said that they enjoyed having the opportunity to design resources that could actually work 'in the field'. The information resources have included: a recording of a spoken word poem, a song, a ‘Top Trumps’ game, a forum theatre script, a sculptural ‘space’ installation and a flipbook animation. These have been accompanied by ‘factsheets’, reflective exercises or role playing scenarios to help translate the ideas into teaching tools. This module and assessment is a stepping stone from the theory of the classroom as students to the practical realities of the profession as midwives.
