Abstract

We propose a cognitive demands account of children’s understanding of verbal probabilities (It is likely). We show that children’s interpretation of verbal probabilities relies on directionality and speakers’ intention. We further suggest that this joint use of directionality and speakers’ intentions supports the pragmatic account of directionality in verbal probabilities.
