Abstract

‘Safe-keeping (custodia)’ (2014) is a four channel video and sound installation that was one of the research outcomes from an interdisciplinary and international collaborative project entitled ‘Geographies of Affect and Memory at the Museo Laboratorio Della Mente, Rome’. The project focussed on the Museo as a site of affective engagement with mental illness, drawing on perspectives from human geography, fine art and visual anthropology. The project explored the methods by which the Museo constructs and re-positions understandings of mental illness by providing an affective engagement with histories and memories of institutionalisation and the phenomenon of mental illness. ‘Safe-keeping (custodia)’ was a solo exhibition in Nov 2014 at the Museo, which occupies the site of the former Santa Maria della Pietà psychiatric hospital. The artwork was developed through engagement with an archive of ‘fagotti’ - unopened packages of personal effects belonging to former psychiatric patients that were taken from the patients when they entered the hospital.
