Following the adoption of new research strategies in advanced infoirmation technology, it has been necessary to develop new research infrastructures, supporting collaborative research and development. SRI hosted the Cambridge conference on which the book is based. The chapter reviews traditional approaches, and introduces the Alvey and ESPRIT programmes. It is vital to broaden informed access to the technology.
