Abstract

This paper explored the impasse between critical theory and visual culture studies in terms of opposing models of cultural consumption. It looked to Frederic Jameson's 1979 article ‘Reification and Utopia in Mass Culture’ as a starting point to negotiate this impasse and develop an alternative explanatory framework that could adequately address Alan Moore’s ‘Roscoe Moscow’ strip for Sounds magazine, and the cultural politics of the larger punk movement it refracted.
