Abstract

"Drawing Conversations: reflecting upon collective and collaborative drawing practices" brings together presentations given at a symposium at Coventry University in December 2015. The chapter "Net Curtain" will reflect on the issues raised by work shown at Thelma Hulbert Gallery in 2014. Net Curtain is a drawing made across all the windows of Thelma Hulbert Gallery that creates the illusion of nets in the windows. With one continuous line/thread that travels over the entire gallery, the drawing insinuates itself within the house, its histories and its resonances. Net Curtain was hand drawn by a group of local women during an intensive two-day event. This event was central to the project and promoted a connection with working conditions for women, local and international, historic and contemporary. The women were paid for their labour and invited to view research material and share their work histories in the projects reading room. Net Curtain was commissioned for the exhibition intoLACE by the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton, Devon, and was generously supported by Arts Council of England and Kingston University.
