Early work on the design and construction of a deformable mirror based on a novel actuation method is reported. The actuation is effected via the Lorentz force which acts on a current in the region of a transverse magnetic field. The mirror is characterised with respect to focal length variations, which are of the order of 30% for a current of approximately SA in a field of 0.4T. Aberrations in the system are discussed, and suggested improvements are offered.
