Abstract

At the 2008 ECA conference the conceptual development and initial evaluation of an innovative practice-based foundation course for emergency care nurses was presented to delegates. Twelve months on the course has gone from strength to strength and further evaluation data has been collected. This unique, collaboratively developed course consists of formal study days, preceptorship and portfolio development, resulting in Band 5 Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) foundation gateway progression and 15 academic credits at either level 5 or 6. Initial evaluation showed the course supported the personal and professional development of staff, including increased confidence, job satisfaction, knowledge and skills. Crucially, for the many newly-qualified nurses working in this demanding clinical environment, the course provided a transition from pre-registration training and kept them ticking-over academically. Additionally, there was evidence that the course had a positive impact upon recruitment and retention. Initial evaluation data also provided essential feedback for future course development. The second phase of the evaluation commenced in January 2009 with the second cohort of participants who were surveyed to compare findings with the pilot group. Further data collection included interviewing members of the pilot group who had gone on to the next stage of emergency care education; interviews with senior emergency care staff to elicit stakeholder perspectives; documentary analysis of participants’ portfolios; and analysis of recruitment and retention figures. Funding was secured following a number of successful bids to support this ongoing development and evaluation. This presentation will share results of the full evaluation.
